Scooter Driver Killed in Clearwater DUI Accident

An early morning Clearwater crash on Belcher Road and Gulf-to-Bay Blvd. kills a man operating a scooter, sends another man to the hospital and a third man to jail.

According to, Jerome Keith Smith was riding a scooter northbound on Belcher Road about 1:45 a.m. when he was hit by a westbound car that ran the red light on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard.  The impact of the crash caused Mr. Smith and his scooter to hit a third vehicle that was also headed north on Belcher Road. Sadly, Mr. Smith died from injuries in this crash.

The driver of the third vehicle, Christopher Cordes, was taken to Morton Plant Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.  The at-fault driver accused of running the red light showed signs of impairment after he exited his 2006 Chrysler Sebring. He subsequently was charged with driving on a suspended or revoked license in an accident involving death or serious bodily injury and was taken away to jail.  Further charges are likely after the results of the blood draw are obtained.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Smith’s family.  These types of tragedies occur too often on Clearwater streets and impact too many families.  The impact of this fatal scooter accident will be felt by Mr. Smith’s family (as well as the other drivers for other reasons) for a long time.

Don’t drink and drive.  As this accident shows, doing so could result in a death of an innocent person.
