Congratulations, Class of 2020!

Whether you’re getting ready for your first semester college or taking your first steps into the “adult world,” you should be very proud of yourself and your accomplishments. School isn’t always easy or fun, but you did it, class of 2020!

Our law firm was established in Pinellas County in 1955, so we have seen many graduations throughout the years—and some proud of those proud graduates eventually ended up joining our team. In fact, all of our attorneys attended a Pinellas County high school or law school!

As one of Tampa Bay’s first personal injury law firms, we are very excited to see what the fresh batch of graduates will bring to the world! But as personal injury attorneys, we also know that graduation season can be a dangerous time.

Car Accidents During Graduation Season

In fact, nearly 1/3rd of all fatal car accidents involving teenagers occur between April and July. These statistics became a tragic reality for students at Lakewood High School in 2018 when three seniors were involved in a car accident just weeks before graduation. The students were leaving school together when the driver lost control and collided with a tree, killing one of the students and seriously injuring the other two.

When crashes happen at school, it’s unlikely that alcohol plays a role. But in many other instances of summertime car accidents, alcohol is a dangerous factor. End-of-semester activities, like senior trips, graduation parties, or “skip days” often expose young people to alcohol and other dangerous substances, and increase the risk of students getting in the car with intoxicated friends and classmates.

Responsible Tips for Recent Grads

If you’re a class of 2020 grad who has finally received that coveted diploma, you might be feeling very grown-up and mature. But while you are taking a big step in life, remember that drinking is still illegal until you’re 21! If you find yourself at a party or event where peers are drinking, keep these tips in mind:

  • Always remember that you can say NO to anything you’re comfortable with
  • Never accept a drink from anyone, even if it’s just water or soda, and keep an eye on your drink at all times
  • Stay with a friend during the event—you’re never too old for the buddy system
  • Don’t be afraid to call 911 if someone is suffering from alcohol poisoning or an overdose
  • Never get in the car with someone who has been drinking or using drugs
  • Remember that you’re not invincible!

These tips aren’t just for teens, either! If you’re an adult celebrating your successful graduation in higher education, remember to enjoy responsibly. At any age or stage of life, irresponsible decisions can have lasting consequences. No one wants to have their first step in a new direction suddenly shattered or set back by a bad choice.

You’ve worked so hard to get where you are in life—make smart decisions during graduation so that your future is as bright as it should be!
