Yesterday’s Storms Caused Multiple Car Accidents in Tampa Bay

Car accidents were everywhere yesterday in the Tampa Bay area as a result of the storms. These car accidents included a sinking car, a tanker truck blocking all southbound lanes of I-275, and a man dying as a result of a head-on collision in New Port Richey.

The St. Petersburg Times reports that the storms passing through the Tampa Bay area left 7 inches of rain or more and caused power outages, fires, and car accidents. In St. Petersburg, a woman was pulled safely from her sinking car by two bystanders at the 2400 block of 58th Street North. By the time the fire department arrived, her car was underwater.

The St. Petersburg Times also reported that another car accident that occurred yesterday resulted in a tanker truck blocking all southbound lanes of I-275 for two hours. The car accident occurred when the tanker truck began to roll backwards on an uphill portion of I-275. The tanker involved in the car accident was traveling on I-275 at 9:00 a.m. in heavy rain and heavy traffic. The tanker slid back into a 2010 Mercedes and then jackknifed across all southbound lanes of I-275 near the Ashley Drive exit. Luckily, no one was injured in the car accident.

Unfortunately, a New Port Richey driver was not so lucky.  Bay News 9 reports that Jon Kelly Swoager, 46,  died in a car accident yesterday when an unidentified driver heading east on State Road 54 changed lanes in front of another driver, James Profita. Profita swerved to avoid the car accident but lost control when his car started rotating sideways and slid across the median into the westbound lanes. His car entered the path of Swoager’s Chevy pick-up truck and resulted in a head-on collision, taking Swoager’s life.

Storms in the Tampa Bay area are common at this time of year. That’s why it is important for all Tampa Bay drivers to drive with extra caution in the rain and make sure that all vehicle maintenance is up to date.
