Tragedy at the Ohio State Fair

For most people, upbeat carnival music brings back memories of thrilling rides, fascinating attractions, and deep-fried delights. Occasionally, however, we hear about an accident that makes us never want to go to a fair or carnival again. The latest tragedy happened just last night at the Ohio State Fair, leaving one person dead.

The accident happened on Wednesday night at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus. Fair patrons were enjoying a ride called “The Fireball,” which spins riders in the air, holding them about 40 feet above the ground. Without any prior warnings, part of the ride broke apart while it was in motion. This caused a row of seats to split from the rest of the ride and plummet to the ground. One victim, an 18-year-old male, died on impact with the ground. At least two others remain in critical condition. Witnesses, many of whom were in line for the ride, say it was like watching a nightmare unfold.

Another Scary Fair Accident

A few days before the accident, the Fireball ride was inspected. No defects or potential dangers were found. However, several other rides at the fair did not pass inspection. The chief ride inspector with the Amusement Ride Safety Division says that his team is always thorough, knowing the importance of safe rides. At this point, it’s unclear what caused the fatal accident. Ohio’s governor, John Kasich, is ordering a full investigation into the accident. Additionally, all rides are shut down as a precaution. Other aspects of the fair, however, are still open to the public.

Hopefully, the investigation can figure out what caused this tragedy. While nothing may ever sooth the grief of those who lost a loved one, knowing what happened — and what can to done to prevent it from ever happening again — might bring some closure and justice.
