Clearwater woman charged in fatal accident
A fatal crash in the Clearwater area has led to the arrest of a local woman. According to reports, the accident occurred between a motorcycle and a car and happened around 9:40 p.m. on April 13. According to police, the 47-year-old Clearwater woman was traveling south on Missouri Avenue in a 2001 Buick Century. She allegedly cut in front of a 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle in the process of attempting to turn left at Belleair Road. The motorcycle was reportedly moving north on Missouri Avenue at the time of the crash.
The 24-year-old rider was killed. It was unclear from reports exactly what the injuries suffered by the man were or whether he was killed at the scene or was transported to a medical facility. The Belleair Road and Missouri Avenue intersection was closed as authorities with the traffic homicide team investigated.
According to police, the woman allegedly appeared intoxicated at the time of the crash and reportedly admitted to consuming alcohol prior to the accident. It was not clear, however, if police administered a field sobriety test. The woman was charged with DUI manslaughter and was being held without bail at the Pinellas County Jail.
In addition to the criminal charges the woman is facing, it may be possible for the surviving family members of the 24-year-old killed in the fatal motorcycle accident to file a wrongful death suit. They could be awarded compensation for loss of companionship, medical expenses and other claims. Money cannot ease the pain of losing a loved one, but it can alleviate the stress associated with any financial pressures and bring the family a small amount of closure.
