Student Killed In Crash Near Bus Stop

After a busy day at school, most kids probably look forward to a night of playing outside, spending time with their family, or relaxing with a favorite game or book. Thanks to an allegedly drunk driver, one Polk County student never made it home to enjoy his after-school activities.

All the students attend Dundee Ridge Middle School in Poinciana. The accident occurred after the end of the school day.  The students were heading home. The driver, John Camfield, first hit three students. Though not seriously injured, the three students report back, wrist, and shoulder pain.

He then continued to veer off the road, where he struck two other boys. Both boys sustained critical injuries and were airlifted to the hospital. One died of his injuries this morning. The other remains in critical condition. Finally, after hitting a parked vehicle, Camfield drove away from the scene. After a deputy’s daughter witnessed the horrific accident, she called her father, who was able to find and apprehend Camfield.

Camfield faces two counts DUI with serious bodily injured, two counts leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury, and two counts leaving the scene of a crash with bodily injury. He also faces three counts DUI with injury and property damage. He also has previous DUI arrests in another state.

Leaving the scene of an accident is always a serious crime. Furthermore, leaving the scene after injuring children is simply heartless and cruel. To the loved ones of the child who was killed, Camfield’s actions are likely unforgivable. As the community grieves, we can only hope that Camfield will see proper punishment for his actions.
