Garbage Truck Runs Over Bicyclist
A car accident involving a garbage truck and a bicyclist Tuesday morning resulted serious injuries. The St. Petersburg Times reports that the car accident involving the bicyclist occurred at 11:30 a.m. when bicyclist, Alexander J. Aponte, 19, was riding his mountain bike south on the sidewalk on First Avenue North, approaching Sixth Street.
There were witnesses that reported to police that the bicyclist appeared to panic when he saw the truck. The garbage truck was entering the intersection when the car accident occurred. The bicyclist abruptly turned right and crashed into a telephone pole, deputies said. He was thrown off his bike. After landing beneath the rear wheels of the garbage truck, the truck rolled over him.
The driver of the garbage truck attempted to assist the bicyclist after the car accident. He called 911 and provided first aid. The bicyclist was conscious at the time according to deputies and was taken by paramedics to Bayfront Medical Center. The car accident is currently under investigation.
