Eggo Recall

For many people, Eggo waffles were a staple of delicious childhood breakfasts. But if you’re thinking about relieving those memories, reconsider. This week, Eggo announced that it is recalling 10,000 cases of its Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat flavored waffles after a routine test revealed listeria.

What is Listeria?

Listeria is a serious infection, and is typically caused by eating contaminated food. It is often found in meat spreads and deli meats, unpasteurized cheese and milk products, refrigerated smoked seafood, and raw sprouts. Pasteurization typically kills the bacterium that causes listeria. This is why it’s mainly prominent in raw foods.

Symptoms of listeria can include stiffness of the neck, fever, confusion, weakness, vomiting, and in some cases, diarrhea. For most people, it is not fatal, but is certainly not a pleasant experience, either. It is, however, dangerous to pregnant women, as it can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, or lasting health effects on the child. Like with many other infections, older people, young children, and those with compromised immune systems are also at a higher risk.

Recall Facts

The recall doesn’t quite mean listeria hysteria, though! Currently, there are no reports of listeria through the consumption of the recalled Eggo waffles. It’s possible that the listeria is not widespread, or not found in all 10,000 packages of the waffles. However, Eggo is being a responsible producer and recalling the product and releasing the recall information to the public. When a company recalls their own product, it’s called a voluntary recall. No other Eggo products have been recalled.

If you have purchased the Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat waffles recently, you should throw them away and contact Eggo for a full refund. Like with all recalled food products, do not eat them even if they smell or look fine. You might think that a recall will not affect you, but you never know.

As Eggo themselves would say, if you own this product, it’s time to leggo that Eggo!
