The computerized reality of today’s auto insurance industry

Someone hits your car. You’re injured and have to seek medical treatment. You can’t work. The medical bills begin to pile up. Surely insurance will cover my losses and compensate me for my injuries, right?

These are issues and questions you might have after being involved in a car accident. Unfortunately, insurance companies rarely view your case as favorably as you do. Further, the insurance claims process today is not based on the judgment of insurance adjusters, but instead on the use of computerized software systems.

The advocacy group, Consumer Federation of America (CFA), recently raised concerns that “the computerized claims systems used by many of the nation’s largest auto insurance companies can be easily adjusted to make “lowball” claims payments to injured motorists.” Mark Romano, CFA’s claims project director, stated that CFA’s concerns should be “a wake-up call for consumers and regulators who are not aware of the many ways that computer claims software can be manipulated to produce unjustifiably low injury payments to consumers and tens of millions of dollars in illegitimate ‘savings’ for insurers.”

The main software culprit is Colossus, widely considered the dominant claims’ system on the market. Colossus is a product sold by Computer Sciences Corp. (CSC). This software is great at creating predictable and consistent bodily injury claim evaluations; however, the software also results in huge savings for insurance companies because claims are systematically underpaid and undervalued.

If you are injured in a car accident, please don’t try to take on the insurance company alone. Their computerized software systems will view you only as a number and will undoubtedly result in your case being undervalued.
