Bucs Player Arrested for DUI
When it comes to drinking and driving, no one is exempt from the consequences. Mot even professional football players! Austin Seferian-Jenkins, a tight end with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was arrested early Friday morning for driving under the influence. It still serves as yet another reminder of the dangers of drinking and driving.
Around four in the morning, Seferian-Jenkins was driving southbound on I-275, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. He was going well over the designated speed limit of 50 miles per hour. When he was pulled over, Seferian-Jenkins was described as agitated, with clear signs of intoxication. After refusing to take a breathalyzer test, he was charged with a DUI.
With only two days left until the season opener, the arrest could have an impact on Seferian-Jenkins’ career. More importantly, however, his reckless decision could have resulted in a loss of life or serious injury. In Florida, drunk driving deaths make up for 27% of all car accident fatalities. Across the United States, hundreds die in drunk driving accidents every year.
Drunk driving kills
Seferian-Jenkins is not the only person to make the decision to drink and drive. Unfortunately, he is unlikely to be the last. 2.1% of Floridians admit to driving after drinking. Though they are many other alternatives (getting a ride with a friend, Uber, etc), too many people brush off their intoxication, and claim they are okay to drive after a few drinks. The families of the 8,476 people killed in drunk driving accidents between 2003 and 2012, however, would argue that one poor choice leads to a lifetime of pain and suffering.
No one, from professional athletes to teachers, students to politicians, is invincible to the dangers of drunk driving. Thankfully, no one was injured in the incident with Austin Seferian-Jenkins. But many other drunk driving incidents end with horrible consequences for everyone involved. Learn from this incident, and make a commitment to always make responsible decisions.
