As the weather heats up, so do the watercraft accidents
Wave runners, jet skis, water scooters and boat are all quite the rave this time of year in the Tampa Bay area. While watersport activities are on the rise with the increase in the temperature, so are the related accidents and injuries.
Unfortunately, according to The Tampa Bay Times, a teenager from Pennsylvania was transported to the hospital for a head injury yesterday, due to a water scooter accident just west of John’s Pass. Although the teenager intended to have a fun time on the water with his family, on vacation, it ended the way many water scooter accidents often do.
According to Robert Scholl of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, water scooters are the “motorcycles of the ocean.” Scholl said, “[w]hen you have an inexperienced driver, it’s important to follow safety protocols; Wear your life jackets, wear your lanyards, [and] be careful on the water.”
We’ve stressed it once before, but it is important to know, Florida law directs that personal watercraft be operated in a reasonable and prudent manner, and failure to do so can result in a first degree misdemeanor. Watercraft related accidents often result in serious injuries and sometimes death.
