Checking Your List Twice
COVID-19 risks mean that you and your family might not be grocery shopping as often as you used to, forcing you to rely more heavily on canned goods or frozen foods. If you’ve recently restocked your pantry or freezer, do a quick check to make sure you don’t own any recalled products—especially if you recently purchased spring rolls! In April 2020, four brands saw recalls of their spring roll products:
The Dangers of Undeclared Allergens
All products were recalled over undeclared allergens. This is when an ingredient is in a product but not listed on the label. Generally, this occurs when the product is manufactured in a factory with other products, leading to cross-contamination. It also occurs when an ingredient is mistakenly or negligently left off the list. Undeclared allergens are particularly dangerous because a person with allergies may look at the ingredients and believe that it is safe for them to consume. For some people, consuming an undeclared allergen might lead to mild discomfort. For others, it could cause a serious reaction, including anaphylaxis.
In April 2020, some other food products that saw allergies due to undeclared allergens include:
- Whole Foods queso sauce
- DSD Merchandise mixed nuts
- Joe’s Gluten-Free Foods potato and onion pierogis
Before You Hit the Road
Finally, April 2020 also saw a handful of vehicle recalls. If you’re thinking about buying a new car, RV, or motorcycle, here are some brands to be aware of:
- McLaren Automotive
- Forest River
- Bombardier Recreational Products
- Land Rover
- Thor Motor Coach
- Indian Motorcycle Company
- Ford and Volvo
