Ring in 2019 With These Safety Tips
Can you believe that 2018 is coming to a close?! With multiple mass shootings, a contested Supreme Court nomination, and a seemingly endless stream of political drama, 2018 was definitely a turbulent year. But this past year also brought us many great things, like:
- The winter Olympics in South Korea, where dozens of American athletes broke records and won gold, including Chloe Kim, who became the youngest woman to win a gold medal in her halfpipe snowboarding, and Adam Rippon and Gus Kenworthy, the first openly gay Americans to compete in the Olympics
- The extravagant wedding of British royal Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle
- Great, groundbreaking movies like Black Panther, A Wrinkle in Time, and Crazy Rich Asians
- Voter turnout hitting a 100-year high during the midterm elections in November
2018 was a unique, complex year filled with plenty of highs and lows, but there is still so much to celebrate on New Year’s Eve. But whether you’re waving goodbye to 2018 or excitedly welcoming in 2019, be sure to stay safe and responsible while celebrating on New Year’s Eve. You don’t want to start off 2019 with a trip to jail or the ER!
Planning to Imbibe?
- Plan in advance. Before going out for the night, decide who will be the designated driver. If no one is willing to give up drinking for the night, discuss an alternative plan. Have the number of a taxi service on hand, or download the Uber app.
- Don’t drink on an empty stomach. Have a heavy and healthy meal before going out and bring some small snacks with you to eat throughout the night. If you’re hosting your own party, be sure to have plenty of snacks for your guests. You could even ask people to bring a favorite dish and make it a potluck!
- Watch your drink. New Year’s Eve is a big drinking holiday, and unfortunately, that means it’s the perfect night for people who wants to commit crimes. While your drink is unattended, someone could slip drugs, like roofies or other “date rape” drugs into your cup.
- Popping the cork off a champagne bottle is fun, but it’s actually not that safe. According to experts, a quieter “kiss” sound is actual the proper result, not a loud pop. When opening a bottle, keep it pointed away from people, animals, or anything breakable.
- Avoid a hangover by staying hydrated. Be sure to drink water throughout the night, or mix your drinks with soda to dilute some of the alcohol.
- DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!!!
- Even if you are being the responsible designated driver, remember that intoxicated drivers may be on the roads, especially after midnight.
- To be extra safe, don’t use fireworks at home. Instead, go to a local public fireworks display to view the festive lights without any of the hassle or danger.
- Point fireworks away from homes and people. You should also avoid areas with dry grass or lots of bushes or trees.
- Only responsible adults should use fireworks. Kids can enjoy the bright lights from afar, but never let a child light them. Intoxicated adults, too, should be kept away from fireworks or other explosives.
- Always have a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby.
- Many pets are afraid of loud noises, and so New Year’s Eve, which is filled with fireworks, noisemakers, and other festive sounds, can be a very stressful time. Keep pets indoors, and give them a safe, quiet space in your home to hide in. If you’re having people over, keep an eye on the door to make sure a scared pet doesn’t bolt out the door.
- Have you pet ID’ed, just in case they do get outside on New Year’s Eve.
- Don’t feed your pets any “people food” during a party, and keep them away from chocolates, alcohol, and other harmful substances.
