Eye injuries may not be commonly associated with accidents. However, blindness can occur through many types of personal injury matters.
- Car Accidents. During a car accident, your head may hit a dashboard, window, or other object, causing head trauma. When this happens, you can experience retinal detachment. The retina is the thin tissue of cell and nerve fibers. It covers the inside of the eye, and it can be easily torn, punctured, or detached. When the retina is damaged, fluid passes through between the retina and the back of the eye. This causes blind spots. This might not always cause permanent blindness, but if left untreated, it may cause irreversible blindness. In an accident, flying debris, like broken glass, may also cause eye trauma or blindness.
- Workplace injuries. If you work with certain materials, like glass or metal, there is a chance that a foreign object could hit your eye, causing damage. Chemical contact can also cause blindness.
- Gun accidents.
- Medical malpractice. For example, medical negligence or error during Lasik surgery could render a patient blind.
Anything that deprives the eye of oxygen can also cause blindness. This leads to conditions like Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy or Posterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy.
After An Eye Injury
Blindness can result in a total loss of independence, which can lead to a loss of wages or the need for further assistance. It may prevent you from driving a car, working the job you previously held, or enjoying favorite pastimes. Sudden blindness may put physical, emotional, and financial strains on you and your loved ones. After an accident, regaining your quality of life is difficult, but not impossible.
