A sprain is caused by tearing of the ligaments, the tissues that connect the bones to each other. Unfortunately, once it is torn, it is hard to get it back to its original condition. Similar to a torn piece of paper, the ligaments are not the same after the tearing. You can try to tape the torn paper back to its original state, but it is never the same. Nor are the torn ligaments.

In contrast, a strain is caused by damage to the muscle or the tendons--the bands of tissue that connect muscle to bones. A strain is also a serious injury, but no tearing of ligaments are involved.
