Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability. There are many causes of (TBI) despite our best attempts to protect the skull and brain utilizing airbags in cars and helmets in the case of many motorcyclists. This injury can happen to Motorcyclists regardless of whether a helmet is worn.
Injury to the brain can occur when the brain itself moves within the skull causing it to collide with the inside of the skull. This process alone is sufficient to create bleeding stretching and tearing of blood vessels and changes in intracranial pressure that can lead to lasting damage. This type of injury is often referred to as a closed head injury as the brain although not exposed can be seriously and permanently injured forever affecting a person’s ability to think, speak, see and move. Symptoms may include loss of consciousness, dizziness, difficulty balancing, lightheadedness, blurred vision, behavioral mood changes, confusion, thinking and concentration, memory difficulties.
A penetrating or open head injury occurs when an object collides with the skull piercing it resulting in even more serious brain injury. This type of injury is unfortunately common in the United States. Motor vehicle accidents alone account for 20% of all U.S. Traumatic Brain Injuries.
